Candles
There are a very small number of driver’s driver drivers that does not know how a candle is. They certainly don’t want to read anything about this topic, because they are simply not interested. They will probably prefer diesel cars or will have friends who take care of their car. For the others, we will present some information very briefly: the candles (one for each cylinder) are introduced into the newspaper so that they reach the combustion chamber, where they will turn on the mixture of fuel at any time of combustion, due to a spark.
Responsible for this spark is the candle, consisting of two electrodes, one central, isolated with porcelain, also covered with a metal housing with a special form, at one end the hexagonal piece for tightening with the candle and the other end, to screw the head. The distance between the electrodes, the size of an bait is given by the manufacturer. The quality of a candle, the operating time and implicitly its price are given by the material from which the tip of the central electrode is made: copper niche, platinum, double platinum or iridio.
The copper candles have equipped the old generation engines, equipped with low voltage delcou, to which the tip of the electrode has 2.5 mm and is made of copper or nickel. These candles resist a little over time.
Platinum candles have the tip of the platinum electrode and the electrode on the ground is made of steel.
The candles with double platinum have the tip of the platinum and on the ground electrode they have a small disc, also made of platinum. These candles are resistant over time and maintain even over 100,000 km.
The candles with Iridium have a very thin tip of Iridio which leads excellent electricity and produces a strong spark. The grounding electrode also has a small platinum disc.
Symptoms of glitter with defective sparks
Many drivers and when they have problems starting the car, they go first to check the battery. It could also be one of the causes, but it is not the only one. Old or defective candles can be the main culprit; Although small, they have a very important job to do. Changing candles would be a good idea when it presents itself The following symptoms:
- The engine that controls the light turns on – The wear of candles or candles can turn on the «engine verification» indicator, which, among other engine defects, also signals this problem. Normally when the key revolves in contact, it should light intermittently and extinct when the engine starts; If this does not happen and continues to turn on unexpectedly, then it must be controlled by the closure. The best thing is that the candles are replaced in advance, in the car maintenance phase, based on the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Start problems – The candles have the role of providing the spark that turns on the fuel mixture. In the situation in which the car begins, the cause can come simultaneously from different candles and/or sheets.
- Greater fuel consumption – If the candles are dying, the fuel that enters the engine does not burn effectively; An incorrect ignition caused by candles can increase consumption of up to 30%, but also gas emissions of up to 4%. The change of candles can make miracles for the savings of fuel, say specialists on the field.
- The engine does not turn – If the zangan engine, pass or have interruptions, a cause can be one or two of the candles.
- The engine does not accelerate – If the car is not as receptive as normally, especially when you want to accelerate, the cause can come from candles.
- Overheated candle – If the candle is very hot, it could be an engine overheating or an inadequate petrol / inadequate air mixture. In this situation, the checks will continue to determine the exact cause.
- The candle has carbon deposits (smoked candle) – When there is such a problem, the causes can be:
– The car’s coal filter is embalmed
– The ignition voltage is small (the power battery is verified)
– The cold start system has a problem
- The candle has breakage – If the candle has breakage, it means that there are foreign objects that have entered the combustion room. This is an alarm signal that requires to carefully control the cylinders not to destroy the engine.
- The candle has ash – The ash comes from the additives of the fuel. The checks will continue this time, because these residues can also be deposited on the engine block. These deposits meet by car crossing crowded cities, on short distances, where subsequent and repeated stops are located.
What information do we receive when examining a worn candle?
The candles can be damaged both by the wrong exploitation of the car and its incompatibility with other components of the car. The information received from the examination of a worn candle is as follows:
- The central electrode of the candle becomes yellow – Gardening takes place at high temperatures, caused by sudden and strong accelerations or in the operation of the candle incompatible with the engine and therefore must be replaced with a compatible candle.
- Cink dry – If the candle has no trace of lubrication, it means that the tension for the lighting of the spark is above normal and this may be due to the incompatibility with the candle and the replacement again.
The candles are not exactly the most expensive supplies of the car, which is why it is good to change the entire kit, to the first sign, because improper candles can attract other repairs of the car, more expensive. It is preferable to put exactly the same type of candle. Each candle has a code and each car model needs a certain type of candle, then when you buy the new candles, use the code on worn candles.
How much do sparks change?
It is better to follow the exchange intervals recommended by the manufacturer. Usually the sparks candles should have changed every 30,000 km – 60,000 km. There are also candles that have a duration of 100,000 km. Some peel producers recommend controlling the functionality of the candles once a year.
The recommendations of specialists, information, for different brands of cars:

- Hyundai – 40,000 km
- Audi – 80,000 km
- Skoda Octavia – 60,000 km
- Opel – 30,000 km
But if the symptoms appear above, they must be replaced immediately. Continue to circulate with improper candles, you are at risk of deteriorating the engine. If you do not have the skills necessary to perform this operation, call a field specialist or an authorized service.
Incandescent candles
In diesel engines, compression is much higher and diesel mixture – air doesn’t need spark. Diesel engines work based on the compression of the air-motorin mixture, not lighting it with the help of a candle.
When the piston compresses the air in the piston, a very large heat is created and when the injector introduces the diesel, it instantly lights up from the heat and explosion that pushes the piston, finally leading to the movement of the engine. But there are times when compression needs … help.
Diesel engine lovers once know that there is only one, in the suction gallery. In fact, those models warmed the air on the suction gallery only at the first start and therefore the fuel mixture has reached an optimal temperature to trigger the explosion in the combustion chamber. Later, the incandescent candle was still active only if they were too much in a place and in the raca engine.
Most diesel engines today have incandescent candles, one for each cylinder. The incandescent candle is practically not a candle, but rather a heater.
It is a piece of metal with a resistance inside that reacts to the electric current. The name «Glow Plug» in English, but also in «Cink Cink incandescent» Romanian derives from the fact that this heater is blushing when it produces heat. It is a very little used element in the operation of a diesel engine. If the temperature is greater than 25 ° C, the incandescent candle does not work at all, it is not necessary.
Symptoms of defective incandescent candles
Although incandescent candles have a long life, they can deteriorate over time due to wear. The main wear signs indicating that incandescent candles have changed, are:
1 – The defective witness of the engine is on the board – The defective witness of the engine is often the first indication that something is wrong. If possible, bring the car immediately to an authorized service for a professional diagnosis.
2 – Cumbersome beginning – When the engine starts hard, incandescent candles are most likely. When it is cold outside, the combustion chamber does not reach the right temperature to turn on the fuel and the start of the engine, therefore it is mandatory to operate the incandescent candles. If there are no fuel or battery problems, it is necessary to check the incandescent candles. When the incandescent candles have worn or have carbon deposits, the engine will start increasingly difficult over time.
3 – Walking towards a defect and white smoke – Once started, the car will remove the white smoke on the drain tunnel for several minutes, until the engine warmed up. The damaged incandescent candles do not allow the achievement of the optimal temperature to each cylinder, the fuel burning incomplete, released a white smoke and an smell of non -gas.
4 – The engine provides rates – caused by the quality of fuel, by the injection of diesel and/or compression. In the combustion chamber, it is necessary to reach at least 230 ° C for self -ligance. If the incandescent candles are worn, this temperature will not be reached in the combustion chamber.
5 – Black smoke – blue – It is caused by the imbalance of the ratio of the fuel mixture: too much diesel and too little air. If the incandescent candles are defective, the mixture in the combustion chamber will also tilt the proportions to the excess of the diesel, leading to the production of black – blue smoke. Black – Blue Smoke at Start announces that incandescent candles or other vital components of the combustion process are defective.
How much do incandescent candles change?
Specialists recommend changing incandescent candles after 100,000 km, although the technical books of vehicles do not specify a period for their replacement. For example, the BMW is recommended to replace incandescent candles at 60,000 km, if it was mainly running in the city and 150,000 km, if more on the highway it has a course. Our recommendation is:
- Check the conditions of incandescent candles to reach the first 90,000 km
- Change incandescent candles if you have already traveled 100,000 km
- Change the entire set of incandescent candles to prevent dysfunctionality in the ignition system
- Request control of incandescent candles for each periodic revision of the car
- Request the registration of the incandescent candle operation in the service book
